Frequently asked questions

The app says it cannot find my location.

Open the iPhone Settings app, choose Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Airport Density Altitude, and set access to While Using the App. You can also pick a station yourself with Change station on the main screen.

Why is the field elevation slightly different from the METAR?

A weather station’s sensor can sit at a slightly different height than the published airport elevation. The app uses the published field elevation when it looks up the nearest airport, so it may differ from the station elevation in the raw METAR by a few feet.

The nearest station has no weather.

Some airports do not report weather, and others occasionally miss a report. Use Change station to choose a nearby airport that is reporting, or refresh in a few minutes.

How current is the data?

The weather is the latest METAR from aviationweather.gov. Each METAR shows its own observation time, and the card shows when the app last refreshed. Use Refresh GPS & Weather to update.

My Apple Watch is not updating.

Make sure your Watch is paired and the app is installed on it, then open Airport Density Altitude on your iPhone and refresh. The Watch receives its data from the iPhone, so the iPhone needs to be nearby.

Is the density altitude accurate enough for flight planning?

The calculation follows a standard published method and is verified against its reference examples, but it depends on the reported weather, which is rounded and may be hours old. Treat it as an aid and confirm with official sources and your aircraft’s Pilot’s Operating Handbook.

What information does the app collect?

Very little. See the privacy policy.
